About the Role

MTP Services is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to contribute to the design, development, implementation and maintenance of software applications and digital solutions.

Based in Canberra, the successful candidate will work on software development and technology projects involving application development, system integration, APIs, databases and cloud-based services. The role requires the ability to analyse technical requirements, develop reliable software solutions, troubleshoot application issues and collaborate with technical teams and client stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse business and technical requirements and translate them into software designs and application functionality.
• Design, develop, test and maintain software applications, web applications and reusable software components.
• Develop backend services, application logic, APIs and web services to support business applications and system integration.
• Design and implement integrations between enterprise applications, databases, cloud platforms and third-party systems.
• Develop and maintain database structures, SQL queries and data-processing components to support application functionality.
• Contribute to cloud-based application development, deployment and integration using platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
• Develop and maintain automated data-processing workflows and information-exchange processes between connected systems.
• Implement software testing, debugging and quality assurance procedures to identify and resolve defects.
• Investigate application errors, integration failures and performance issues and implement appropriate technical solutions.
• Apply software development standards, secure coding practices and appropriate data validation and access controls.
• Participate in code reviews, source control, deployment activities and continuous integration processes.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation covering application functionality, APIs, database structures and system integrations.
• Collaborate with solution architects, business analysts, project managers and other developers to deliver software solutions aligned with project requirements.
• Review existing applications and recommend improvements to performance, scalability, reliability and maintainability.
• Provide technical support, maintenance and enhancements for software applications throughout their operational lifecycle.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience in software engineering or software development.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience in software application development, testing, debugging and maintenance.
• Strong programming skills in one or more relevant languages, such as C#, Java, Python or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Experience developing APIs, backend services, web applications and system integrations.
• Knowledge of relational databases, SQL, data modelling and database optimisation.
• Understanding of software architecture, object-oriented programming and software development lifecycle practices.
• Experience with source control systems such as Git and collaborative development tools.
• Understanding of cloud-based applications, application security and software deployment practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate and resolve technical issues.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders.

Desirable Skills

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be highly regarded:

• Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS).
• C#, .NET, Java, Python or modern JavaScript frameworks.
• REST APIs, web services and enterprise application integration.
• Microsoft 365, Power Platform, Dynamics 365 or SharePoint.
• SQL Server, PostgreSQL or other relational database technologies.
• Data engineering, data integration and automated data processing.
• Cloud infrastructure, DevOps, CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
• Geospatial applications and spatial data processing.
• Application architecture, performance optimisation and secure software development.
