Senior Grower

KEY POINTS WE FOUND
  • Lead and manage the growing function within a wholesale nursery.
  • Ensure crop health, quality, and production requirements are met.
  • Coordinate with various departments to achieve production and customer goals.

Your Employer
Our client is an established wholesale nursery producing high-quality vegetable seedlings for commercial growers across Victoria and regional markets.
Operating since the 1990s, the business combines strong horticultural expertise with modern growing systems and a practical, hands-on culture.

With a strong focus on developing its people and building capability for the future, this is an opportunity to take responsibility for a key growing function within an established horticultural operation.

The Role
This is a hands-on technical and leadership position spanning crop health, irrigation, fertigation, pest and disease management, team coordination and continuous improvement. You will work closely with other nursery departments while providing technical guidance and maintaining strong growing, safety and reporting standards.

  • Manage crops from production through to dispatch, ensuring quality and timing specifications are achieved
  • Develop and manage irrigation, fertigation, nutrition and moisture programs in response to crop and climatic conditions.
  • Conduct regular crop scouting and implement appropriate pest and disease management programs
  • Lead daily nursery activities, growing team priorities, work allocation and rosters
  • Coordinate with sowing, dispatch and other departments to meet production and customer requirements
  • Conduct product and crop trials, analyse results and provide recommendations to senior management
  • Maintain growing records, SOPs, JSAs and departmental reporting while upholding nursery hygiene and safety standards

About You
You will be an experienced horticultural professional who combines sound crop knowledge with the ability to lead from the nursery floor. You will be comfortable making day-to-day growing decisions, setting priorities and supporting others while maintaining close attention to crop health, quality and production requirements.

A practical leadership style is particularly important. The business operates with a hands-on culture and is looking for someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities while working constructively with the wider team.

  • Tertiary qualification in horticulture, agricultural science or a related discipline
  • Sound practical experience within horticulture, nursery or comparable crop production
  • Strong knowledge of irrigation, plant nutrition, fertigation, pest and disease management
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, train and coordinate growing staff
  • Strong planning, organisation and problem-solving capability in a commercial production environment
  • Intermediate computer skills and the ability to maintain accurate operational records and reports
  • Current driver's licence and chemical user's certificate

Experience with computerised or automated irrigation systems will be highly regarded, particularly Priva. A Forklift Licence is also desirable.

The Benefits:
Located in Werribee South, approximately 32km south-west of Melbourne's CBD, this opportunity provides access to a major horticultural production region while remaining within reach of metropolitan Melbourne.

The role offers substantial ownership of the growing function within a business that expects its people to be knowledgeable in their field rather than closely micromanaging them. The organisation has also demonstrated a willingness to invest in employee development and longer-term succession planning.

In addition to the location, other benefits include:

  • Competitive salary with flexibility for the right candidate
  • Senior role with meaningful ownership of day-to-day growing operations
  • Access to modern greenhouse technology, remotely operated Priva irrigation technology
  • Long-term professional development and succession opportunities
