Your new company
An opportunity has become available for an experienced Legal Policy Officer to join a well-regarded government organisation on an initial six-month temporary contract. This project-focused role will support a significant review of statutory powers and the development of delegation and authorisation instruments across a broad legislative framework. This position would suit a legal professional, policy officer, paralegal, former government lawyer, or retired legal practitioner with strong statutory interpretation skills and experience working within a regulatory or public sector environment.
Your new role
Working closely with internal stakeholders and subject-matter experts, you will undertake the preparatory work required to support the drafting of statutory instruments. While legal review will be provided by an internal legal officer, you will be responsible for conducting the underlying research, analysis and documentation required to progress the project.Key responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing Acts, Regulations, Rules and By-laws to assess delegable and non-delegable powers
  • Undertaking detailed statutory interpretation and legislative analysis
  • Consulting with internal business areas to obtain instructions and operational context
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive registers and spreadsheets of statutory powers
  • Preparing reports, memoranda and project documentation outlining findings and recommendations
  • Supporting the organisation's governance and legislative compliance objectives

What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Experience interpreting legislation and applying statutory frameworks
  • Legal qualifications, paralegal experience, public sector policy experience, or a related background
  • Strong analytical and research skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience preparing written reports, briefing notes or legal memoranda
  • Ability to engage effectively with a range of internal stakeholders
  • Previous experience within government, regulatory, compliance or legal environments will be highly regarded
