Specialist Rural Generalist | King Island, Tasmania | Island Living & Broad-Scope Generalism

About the Company

Ochre Health is a national leader in rural and remote medicine, supporting over 500 doctors across Australia with a collaborative culture, complete clinical autonomy, and modern practice technology (Best Practice, Cubiko, HotDoc). At Ochre Medical Centre King Island, you’ll join a tight-knit team in an accredited teaching practice backed by dedicated CDM-trained nursing support, administrative staff, and THS visiting specialists.

The Role

Looking for an authentic Rural Generalist role with complete clinical variety and a lifestyle most people only experience on holiday? Positioned within the King Island District Hospital building in Currie, this role offers an engaging mix of primary care general practice, acute emergency medicine, and inpatient hospital care for an island community of ~1,700 locals.

Working alongside GP colleagues in a purpose-built facility, you’ll deliver comprehensive primary care while covering local hospital and emergency on-call services. Supported by Regional Medical Coordinator Dr. Colin Smith and Medical Coordinator Ann Buchan, this position provides incredible broad-scope autonomy backed by robust clinical governance—making it ideal for experienced Fellows or doctors seeking a deeply rewarding rural generalist immersion.

  • Gourmet Food Heaven: World-renowned for King Island Dairy cheese, premium grass-fed beef, fresh crayfish, and local seafood.

  • Close-Knit Community: A safe, welcoming island environment with local childcare and King Island District High School moments from the clinic.

The Perks & Flexible Options

We offer flexible working arrangements designed for Rural Generalists—whether you choose a permanent residential relocation or a high-yield FIFO schedule:

  • Flexible Pathways: Choose between a Permanent role leaving in the island or an interstate Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) commitment (e.g., 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off).
  • Travel & Living Support: All travel, flights, flights coordination, company vehicle, and fully furnished accommodation are 100% paid and provided for both FIFO and permanent living on island doctors.
  • Maximum Government Incentives: MMM7 & DPA location—eligible for the highest tier of rural Workforce Incentive Program (WIP) payments and maximum moratorium scaling.
  • Relocation Support & Grants: Access generous Tasmanian Health Service (THS) rural generalist incentives and sign-on/relocation packages.
  • True Scope of Practice: Full rural generalist model blending hospital inpatient admissions, ED emergency coverage, and outpatient primary care.
  • Site Visit Grant: A $2,000 grant is available for eligible applicants to fly over, meet the team, and experience the island firsthand.

Skills & Experience

  • Qualifications: Specialist or General Registration with AHPRA. Vocational Registration (FACRRM or FRACGP) with Rural Generalist recognition is highly regarded.
  • Clinical Readiness: Current ALS2 or REST certification for acute hospital, ED, and inpatient care participation.
  • Spirit: A clinician who values broad-scope clinical autonomy, collaborative team-based care, and the unique lifestyle of island generalism.
