The Importer or Exporter is responsible for planning, coordinating and managing the company's importing and exporting operations. The position will identify local and international business opportunities, develop commercial strategies, coordinate suppliers and distributors, manage international trade activities, oversee shipping and distribution arrangements, monitor business performance and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and statutory requirements. The role will contribute to the development and implementation of business plans, pricing and credit policies, operational procedures and market development strategies to support the company's growth in local and overseas markets.
Key responsibilities
- Identify local and overseas business opportunities by researching markets, potential customers, suppliers, distributors and commercial opportunities that support the company's growth and expansion.
- Develop and implement business plans and commercial policies, including marketing, operational, human resource, pricing and credit policies and procedures, in consultation with senior management.
- Determine the appropriate mix of products and services to be imported, exported or distributed, and negotiate commercial conditions of trade with customers, suppliers and business partners.
- Liaise with local and overseas suppliers and distributors regarding product availability, pricing, orders, delivery schedules, specifications, contracts and ongoing commercial relationships.
- Research and monitor regulatory and statutory requirements affecting the importing, exporting, wholesaling and distribution of goods, including relevant Australian requirements and applicable overseas market requirements.
- Monitor business performance and prepare estimates, financial information, management reports and operational reports to assist senior management in evaluating commercial performance and making business decisions.
- Identify, appoint and manage agents and distributors in local and overseas markets and maintain effective commercial relationships with appointed representatives.
- Coordinate and arrange the shipment of goods into and out of Australia, including liaising with suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, shipping companies and other relevant service providers.
- Develop and implement after-sales service procedures to ensure customer enquiries, product issues, returns and other post-sale matters are handled effectively.
- Maintain effective relationships with international and domestic business partners, ensuring commercial arrangements are consistent with the company's business objectives.
About you
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce, International Trade, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Marketing or a related discipline is desirable.
- A minimum of 1 year experience in importing, exporting, international trade, wholesale, distribution or commercial operations.
- Demonstrated experience dealing with local and overseas suppliers, customers and distributors.
- Understanding of international shipping, logistics and import/export processes.
- Strong commercial, negotiation, analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to research and interpret regulatory and statutory requirements affecting international trade.
- Strong organisational and relationship-management skills.
