Head of IT – Sydney - Strategic & Hands On Leadership

Morgan Consulting is partnering with a successful and growing Australian organisation seeking a "hands on" Head of IT to lead technology strategy, cybersecurity, enterprise applications, supplier management, and business transformation initiatives. Managing a small internal technology team, this role combines strategic leadership with day to day operational ownership. You'll be responsible for technology governance, cybersecurity, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 Finance, integrations, supplier management, and continuous improvement across the organisation's technology landscape whilst managing strategic relationships with technology suppliers, managed service providers, and system integrators.

About the Role

As Head of IT, you will own the development and execution of the technology strategy, ensuring systems are secure, reliable, scalable, and aligned with business objectives.
You will work closely with business leaders, internal system owners, and external technology partners to manage current operations while driving future-state initiatives across cybersecurity, applications, infrastructure, governance, and business systems.
The environment is highly collaborative, commercial, and outcomes-focused, with multiple concurrent projects ranging from operational improvements through to strategic transformation initiatives.

What You Will Do


Technology Leadership & Strategy

Develop and execute the organisation's IT strategy and technology roadmap.
Partner with executive stakeholders to align technology investments with business goals.
Evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, security, and scalability.
Lead technology planning and prioritisation across multiple initiatives and projects.

Enterprise Applications & Integration

Oversee key business systems including Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 Finance.
Manage application lifecycle planning, upgrades, enhancements, and vendor roadmaps.
Drive application integration initiatives and improve interoperability between platforms.
Work closely with internal system owners and administrators to ensure systems meet business requirements.
Support the selection and implementation of new technology solutions as the organisation evolves.

Cyber Security, Privacy & Risk

Lead cybersecurity strategy, governance, and operational execution.
Drive security initiatives aligned with recognised frameworks and best practices, including CISM principles.
Ensure the organisation maintains strong controls around privacy, compliance, and risk management.
Oversee PCI compliance and security-related governance activities.
Manage cyber risk assessments, incident response processes, and security improvement programs.
Partner with managed service providers and specialist security vendors to strengthen the overall security posture.

Supplier & Vendor Management

Manage strategic relationships with technology suppliers, managed service providers, and system integrators.
Negotiate and manage commercial agreements, contracts, and technology partnerships.
Establish and monitor SLAs and performance frameworks to ensure vendors deliver against agreed outcomes.
Drive accountability across external service providers and technology partners.

Infrastructure & IT Operations

Maintain a secure, reliable, and high-performing technology environment.
Provide oversight of cloud, infrastructure, networking, endpoint management, and collaboration platforms.
Support operational technology, governance processes, and technology standards.
Ensure appropriate disaster recovery, business continuity, and resilience capabilities are in place.

Project Delivery & Business Transformation

Lead multiple concurrent technology projects of varying size and complexity.
Manage technology components of business transformation initiatives, acquisitions, and integration activities.
Balance strategic priorities with operational delivery and business support requirements.
Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned to business objectives.

Leadership & Team Management

Lead a small internal technology function comprising two direct reports. (Infrastructure & Systems Administration Lead (including infrastructure, systems administration, and technology operations responsibilities) and End User Support Lead (including 1st and 2nd line support, desktop services, device management, SharePoint support, and user enablement)).

You will mentor and develop the team while fostering a culture of service excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

What You Will Bring

Proven experience in a Head of IT, IT Manager, Technology Manager, or similar leadership role.
Strong "hands on" experience across Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 Finance environments.
Demonstrated experience leading cybersecurity programs and security governance initiatives.
Strong understanding of PCI, privacy, risk, and compliance requirements.
Experience working with security frameworks and governance models such as CISM.
Strong knowledge of enterprise application integration, cloud platforms, and business systems.
Proven vendor, supplier, and managed service provider management experience.
Experience managing SLAs, technology contracts, and commercial negotiations.
Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building capability across executive and operational teams.
Track record delivering multiple concurrent technology projects and business initiatives.
Ability to operate both strategically and hands-on within a lean technology function.

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
CISM, CISSP, ITIL, Microsoft, or equivalent technology certifications highly regarded.
Experience within multi-site, diversified business environments will be beneficial.
