Coastal GP / Rural Generalist – St Helens, Tasmania

Where turquoise bays meet top-tier medicine (and your patients might bring you fresh-caught fish).

If you’re a GP who loves variety, community, and coastal living, St Helens might just be your next great move. It’s Tassie’s largest town on the east coast — but still small enough that the barista knows your coffee order (and your dog’s name). At Ochre Medical Centre St Helens, we combine high-quality general practice with the relaxed rhythm of seaside living. We’re looking for a Rural Generalist to join our friendly, established team. Full-time preferred, but part-time works too — let’s chat.

The Role:

You’ll work with a close-knit team of GPs, nurses, and admin staff, supported by St Helens District Hospital and a strong local allied health network. The practice runs standard weekday hours, and GPs take part in a rotating on-call roster for hospital coverage.

What’s On Offer

  • $2000 site visit grant for eligible applicants through the People Project
  • Accommodation provided worth $35k
  • Guaranteed daily rate per on-call shift (regardless of callouts)
  • Rural Medical Practitioner payments for hospital work
  • Eligible for:
    • RVTS
    • ACRRM Independent Pathway
    • WIP & Rural Procedural Grants
  • DPA & MMM5 location
  • House provided
  • Universal bulk billing, fully accredited practice
  • Daily pathology on-site
  • Local x-ray and visiting specialists
  • Best Practice software
  • Excellent CDM program and experienced RN support

Why St Helens?

Welcome to Tasmania’s east coast gem — a town of ~2,000 people with beaches, mountain trails, and a thriving food scene all at your doorstep.

  • 5 minutes to Bay of Fires and Binalong Bay
  • 2 hours to Launceston
  • Close to world-renowned mountain biking in Derby and St Helens
  • Surrounded by hiking trails, national parks, fishing spots, and vineyards
  • Local schools, sporting clubs, markets, and a strong sense of community

It’s a location that offers the balance rural GPs are always looking for: meaningful work, welcoming locals, and a lifestyle you’ll actually enjoy.

What You’ll Need

  • General or Specialist Registration with AHPRA
  • ALS2 (or equivalent) Emergency Medicine certificate
  • Experience in rural general practice and/or ED
  • A love of rural generalism — and the flexibility that comes with it
