 About the Positions Peer Worker OR Senior Peer Worker opportunity available on a full-time or part-time basis, fixed term until 30 June 2027, with the possibility of extension. Based in Mackay.
 
Peer Worker
The Peer Worker is a lived-experience practitioner within Medicare Mental Health Centre Mackay providing peer support grounded in Intentional Peer Support principles such as mutuality, shared learning, connection and hope. 
 
Senior Peer Worker
The Senior Peer Worker will not only use their own life experience of mental health and personal recovery to support consumers, but will also support the peer worker team as a role model and mentor. The Senior Peer Worker works collaboratively with the other members of the Medicare Mental Health Centre Mackay team and external services to maximise care outcomes for consumers. They will also support the Medicare Mental Health Centre community engagement activities.
 
Working within the multidisciplinary team, the Peer Worker brings lived experience into shared wellbeing planning, provides individual peer support, and co facilitates group based supports where appropriate. The role also strengthens peer informed practice across the centre through everyday guidance and reflective learning.

Duties

  • Deliver individual and group-based peer support, strengthening hope, connection and agency
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate joined up support around the consumer’s goals and desired outcomes
  • Partner with consumers purposeful and safely sharing lived experience, advocacy and mutual learning
  • Contribute to continuity of connection and a shared wellbeing plan that reduces repetition and supports choice and agency.

 
Skills & Experience
 
Peer Worker

  1. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (or commencement or a willingness to work towards qualification within first 6 months of employment).
  2. Direct lived experience of life changing mental health challenges, mental health service use, as well as periods of healing and personal recovery.
  3. Commitment to safely and purposely share lived experience to engender hope and support others on their personal recovery journey.
  4. Thorough understanding of the importance of personal and professional boundaries, ethical behaviour, policies, and procedures.

Senior Peer Worker

  1. Minimum education of Certificate IV Mental Health, Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Certificate IV in Community Services or Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, or equivalent study.
  2. Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Peer Worker role
  3. Direct lived experience of life changing mental health challenges and/or mental health service use as well as periods of healing and personal recovery
  4. Commitment to safely and purposely share lived experience to engender hope and support others on their personal recovery journey
