Chief Executive Officer

Some leadership opportunities are about maintaining what exists.

This one is about shaping what comes next.

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Association ACT (ATODA) is the peak body for the alcohol, tobacco and other drug sector in the ACT. Through evidence-informed policy, advocacy, research and collaboration, ATODA works to strengthen the sector and improve health and community outcomes for Canberrans.

Well respected by government, members and stakeholders alike, ATODA plays a unique role in bringing together evidence, policy and sector expertise to influence decision-making and ensure the ACT's alcohol and other drug sector remains strong, sustainable and effective.

With an established reputation, a highly capable team and strong stakeholder relationships, the organisation is well positioned for the future. At the same time, evolving funding arrangements and a changing policy landscape create an important opportunity for a new Chief Executive Officer to help shape the next chapter of the organisation's impact and sustainability.

Reporting to the Board, you will lead the organisation's strategic direction, policy and advocacy agenda, stakeholder engagement and operational performance. You will build on ATODA's strong standing as a trusted and independent voice for the sector, ensuring policy positions are grounded in evidence, informed by members and communicated with credibility and influence.

You will work closely with Ministers, senior government officials, community leaders, researchers, service providers and peak bodies across Australia, building productive relationships that advance outcomes for the ACT sector and the community it serves. As the public face of the organisation, you will be equally comfortable engaging with government, representing ATODA in the media and facilitating meaningful dialogue across a diverse membership base.

A key priority for the incoming CEO will be strengthening organisational sustainability. You'll bring an understanding of grants, funding environments and strategic partnerships, alongside the ability to identify opportunities that support long-term organisational viability while remaining aligned to purpose and values.

While direct alcohol and other drug sector experience is not essential, you will bring strong policy capability, sound judgement and an ability to translate research, evidence and emerging issues into clear and persuasive advocacy. You may come from a peak body, health, community services, research, advocacy, government or related environment, but you will have demonstrated success navigating complex stakeholder environments and influencing outcomes.

Most importantly, you will be a collaborative and authentic leader who understands the importance of relationships, evidence and trust. You will lead a small, highly capable team, fostering an inclusive and supportive culture while empowering people to continue delivering high-quality work.

This is an opportunity to lead an organisation with genuine influence, a respected voice and a clear purpose, while helping shape policy, strengthen the sector and improve outcomes for the ACT community.
